Still, the lefthander had all the velocity he needed, throwing three shutout innings in the Sox’ 4-2 win. He allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out seven.
For manager Alex Cora, this spring training is not about assessing Crochet’s talent. That’s unmistakable. It’s more about learning what puts him in the best position to harness that ability.
“It’s about repetition, getting to know him,” Cora said. “Pregame preparation, during the game, it’s the back and forth.”
In his first spring training since being acquired from the White Sox for four prospects, Crochet has worked 6⅓ scoreless innings in three games and struck out 14.

His focus on Wednesday was throwing better sliders, both his sweeper and the bullet slider he calls a gyro.
“Felt like I was competing in the strike zone. When I’m doing that, I’m going to have success,” he said.
The gyro slider spins like a football. It doesn’t move as sharply as a conventional slider but is thrown harder. It was something the Sox suggested he try.
“I wouldn’t have come up with that by myself,” Crochet said.
Before the game, Cora asked Crochet if he was getting everything he needed from the Sox. The conversations, the scouting reports, it all checked out.
“Right away I felt like I belonged. I think that everyone is just getting along really well,” Crochet said. “The camaraderie is really good. Tons of communication from hitters and pitchers, and guys are really meshing well together.”
Hendriks touched up
A rough spring training continued for Liam Hendriks, who allowed one run on four hits in the fifth inning. He has given up four runs on eight hits over three innings in three appearances.
“Two fastballs, two [hits], and after that he pitched,” Cora said. “I think he had a good slider. That’s the thing about spring training, sometimes you have kids just swinging, and that’s what happened today. The stuff is getting better.”
Aroldis Chapman was sharp as he pitched a perfect fourth inning. He has worked 2⅔ innings in the Grapefruit League without giving up a hit. Chapman has walked four and struck out four.
